Cory English has provided voters with clear stances on key issues by responding to the 2018 Political Courage Test.
| Pro-choice | a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation? | ||
| Yes | b) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions? | ||
| We should pursue reasonable, effective policy to reduce the incidence of abortion. This is within our control RIGHT NOW by increasing access to effective birth control and family planning education. Statistics show that restriction of access to abortion DOES NOT reduce the incidence of abortion. The incidence of abortion is very similar in the least restrictive countries and the most restrictive countries. Restriction only makes abortion less safe. Moral teaching has also been found to be effective and is appropriate within the family and community. | |||
1) Budget Stabilization:Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Idaho's budget.
| Yes | a) Do you support repealing the sales tax on groceries sold in Idaho? | ||
| No | b) Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions? | ||
| No | c) Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees? | ||
| No | d) Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients? | ||
| Yes | e) An income tax increase on any tax bracket? | ||
| In Idaho we have cut taxes to the point that vital services have been lost. This is out of balance with the needs of our citizens. Things like increased funding our schools are things we actually need and want. The people I talk to express a willingness to pay more to get the services we need. It is wrong to imply that we can continually cut taxes and still have a functioning state. I do not support an increase on the lowest tax brackets. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting? | ||
| Yes | d) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls? | ||
| I will support every policy that would work to increase voter turnout. Idaho actually has pretty good laws with voter registration at the polls and voting by affidavit. I would like to see expanded early voting and some form of permanent vote-by-mail status, especially for elderly. | |||
| No | a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes? | ||
| No | b) Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes? | ||
| No | c) Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult? | ||
| No | d) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police? | ||
| Yes | e) Do you support the legalization of Cannabidiol Oil (CBD) for medical purposes? | ||
| Yes | f) Do you support prohibiting the use of handheld electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle? | ||
| The reason I don't support capital punishment is that our justice system has so many inherent biases built in. I do support de-criminalization of marijuana but am not quite to legalization yet. The thing that troubles me about treating a minors as adults is that it seems to be related to the nature of the crime rather than the maturity of the minor. If that were corrected I could support it. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth? | ||
| No | b) Do you support lowering state taxes as a means of promoting economic growth? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector? | ||
| Yes | d) Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits? | ||
| No | e) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits? | ||
| Yes | f) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Idaho? | ||
| The questions above are rather open ended. I feel we are at a far end of a balanced approach right now, and need to find a more centrist position. There would be a 'too much' in each area above, but we are a long way off from that point right now. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support adopting federal education standards in Idaho? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support state funding for charter schools? | ||
| Yes | c) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Idaho high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities? | ||
| No | d) Should elementary students' reading test scores influence teachers' pay raises? | ||
| I do not support special loopholes for charter schools. I do support partial state funding for public school facilities if all public schools are included. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support state government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives? | ||
| d) Other or expanded principles: | |||
| Yes | a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation? | ||
| Yes | b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows? | ||
| No | c) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom? | ||
| No | d) Should a license be required for gun ownership? | ||
| We need good research on issues related to gun violence and follow where the research leads us. Right now we should require universal background checks. I do believe that there is a relationship between the prevalence of guns and the violence in our society and that we need to work to keep guns out of the hands of persons with violent intent without restriction of lawful ownership. I do not think that military-style weapons belong on our streets or in our forests. | |||
| Yes | a) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support Medicaid expansion through Idaho's health care programs? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance? | ||
| Yes | d) Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia? | ||
| No | e) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations? | ||
| f) Other or expanded principles: | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Idaho's anti-discrimination laws? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Idaho's anti-discrimination laws? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support greater efforts by Idaho state government in closing the pay gap between men and women? | ||
| d) Other or expanded principles: | |||
| I believe Idaho needs to do better in addressing the needs of Idahoans. My first priority is education. We need to budget on the basis of best practices for best outcomes, and set a course to get there. Additionally, we need to determine the true needs related to healthcare in Idaho, and set a course to get there. Funding should be based on what the needs are, not on what we 'can afford' after cutting taxes. Funding should come first from shifting priorities, but may require an increase in taxes. Idahoans understand that value costs money. |
